Surf and water sports
Mira is a classic west-coast beach break: sandy bottom, consistent waves and plenty of space. Good for learning outside the big days and fun if you already surf.

What the waves are like
Sandbank waves that shift through the year. They pick up northwest swell well, so flat days are rare. With strong north wind the afternoon gets messy — mornings are usually better.
Best time to come
- June to September: smaller waves, milder water — ideal to start.
- September and October: the best balance of swell and good weather.
- Winter: big swells, for experienced surfers.
- A wetsuit is recommended all year round.
Lessons and gear
There are surf and bodyboard schools on the seafront with lessons for all levels and board and wetsuit rental. In high season it pays to book a day or two ahead. If you like, we'll point you to the options our guests have enjoyed most.
If the sea is rough
The Barrinha lagoon, right next door, is flat and sheltered. It works for stand-up paddle, kayaking, pedal boats and, when it's windy, windsurfing and small sailing boats. It's also where children have the most fun.
